Makinde’s impeachment remark sparks reactions online

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has drawn online reactions after a video showed him mentioning the possibility of impeachment while discussing the end of his tenure.

In the video shared on Thursday, the governor said his administration would end “in about one year and one month,” adding, “that is if I have not been impeached.”

The remark circulated on social media, including X, with mixed responses from users. Some described it as a joke, while others questioned if it pointed to political issues.

There is no report indicating that any impeachment process has started against the governor.

The Oyo State Government has not issued a statement explaining the comment as of the time of filing this report.

The comment followed claims that Florence Ajimobi met with the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly Adebo Ogundoyin, over a plan to remove the governor, which she denied.

Reacting to the reports, the Chief Whip of the Oyo State House of Assembly Gbenga Oyekola, denied involvement in any move against the governor.

Mr Oyekola said after a meeting of lawmakers at the Government House, it was observed that some individuals were trying to create division between the House and the state government.

He said the speaker had earlier met with the Olubadan of Ibadan Oba Rashidi Ladoja and was advised on his political plans, including an offer to support a House of Representatives bid, which he declined.

Oyekola added that the speaker was also approached by Ajimobi on the same issue and offered money, which he declined.

He said he was not part of any meeting or arrangement linked to the claims and reaffirmed his support for the governor.

Makinde made the remark during the inauguration of committees for the International Tourism Summit 2026 and a 25-year tourism plan for the state.

He said the summit would be held from May 12 to 14 and asked members of the committees to carry out their work.
