Veteran actor Kola Oyewo dies at 80

Kola Oyewo

Kola Oyewo, one of Nigeria’s respected actors and theatre scholars, has died at the age of 80.

A statement from the family, signed by the actor’s son Adewale Oyewo, paid tribute to the thespian’s contributions, highlighting a legacy that spans multiple generations.

The statement described the deceased as a devoted man of faith, service and integrity. It emphasised that his long life had positively shaped countless individuals in his roles as a father, mentor and friend.

Oyewo’s junior colleague Kunle Afod also announced the death on Instagram on Friday.

Sharing a photo of the late actor, Kunle wrote, “Tonight, we lost a true legend. Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow. His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest well, sir. Your work lives on. ?️ It’s a wrap.”

The cause of death was not disclosed.

In April, QEDNG reported that the veteran actor spoke about how his health condition had affected his acting career. Speaking with Afod, he said he was once very active on film sets and fully committed to his roles before falling ill.

His health challenge became public in 2024 when Kunle visited him. Kola revealed that the symptoms began around 2019 before he was diagnosed and treated.

Despite the condition, the actor said he remained grateful for life and had adjusted to taking less demanding roles.

Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Oyewo built a career spanning theatre, film and academia. He began acting with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group in the 1960s and later became closely associated with playwright Ola Rotimi.

He was widely known for playing Kola in Rotimi’s celebrated play The Gods Are Not to Blame, a role that earned him recognition in Nigerian theatre circles.

Beyond acting, Kola had a long academic career. He lectured in the Department of Dramatic Arts at Obafemi Awolowo University and later taught at other institutions.

His film credits include Saworoide, Koseegbe, Sango, Efunsetan Aniwura and Yemoja.

Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, former students and admirers following news of his death.
