President Bola Tinubu has appointed Modupe Adelabu as chairman of the governing board of the National Examinations Council (NECO).

The appointment was announced on Wednesday in a statement by the president’s special adviser on information and strategy Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, Prof Adelabu will lead the board, while the current registrar of NECO Ibrahim Wushishi will remain in office.

“President Tinubu appointed Prof Modupe Adeola Adelabu as chairman of the governing board of NECO, and retained the current registrar, Professor Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi,” the statement said.

Modupe Adelabu is a retired professor of educational administration.

She served as deputy governor of Ekiti State from 2013 to 2014 and was chairman of the National Board for Technical Education between 2018 and 2021.

She taught at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, where she rose to the rank of professor before retiring in 2020.

Her experience also includes roles in education policy and administration, with contributions to programmes of the National Primary Education Commission and the Universal Basic Education Commission.

The statement said the combination of a new board chairman and a retained registrar is expected to support continuity in NECO’s operations.

The president also approved other appointments in the education sector.

Babatunde Salako was appointed chairman of the National Board for Technical Education, while Idris Bugaje was reappointed as executive secretary for a second term of five years.

Bongfa Binfa was appointed rector of the Federal Polytechnic, N’yak-Shendam, Plateau State, for a single term of five years.

Chinwe Anunobi also had her tenure renewed as director-general of the National Library of Nigeria for a final term of five years.

“The President expects that the renewal of her tenure would ensure continuity in the implementation of ongoing reforms,” the statement said.
