The return of Okada in Lagos

By Sola Salako

Today was one of my saddest days as a Nigerian. I came back from vacation to find Okadas back on the streets of Lagos! Already in three days I have heard two stories of cracked skulls and broken bones from Okada related accidents in my neighbourhood alone!

Why do we hate ourselves so much? Must lives be sacrificed for political correctness? Why are we a people who love darkness and stagnation so much?

Why do we thrive in chaos? Why do we resent orderliness so passionately? Why are we more comfortable with lawlessness?

Why is everything about us so politicised? Why can’t we rise above selfishness and immediate gratification? Isn’t that the character of animals?

Didn’t God create us as humans with superior faculty and the capacity for delayed gratification? Why must we prefer the crumbs now and mortgage our future for what we get now?

Why are we a people who profess faith in an Eternal God, yet cannot invest a dime in our tomorrow? Isn’t eternity an endless tomorrow?

Why must we take three steps forward and five steps backwards; constantly earning deficits rather than profits?

Why?

I really feel we get the leaders we deserve…Nigerians in their majority do not want good governance…and we must stop trying to give them what they don’t want.

Maybe it’s time to let them have what they desire…lawlessness, cluelessness, planlessness and all the aimless drama of political turncoats and misfits so desperate for the perks of power, they are willing to shed blood to “capture” it.

To all who feed the banal nature of Nigerians to exploit their gullibility for political superiority, my prayer for you is that your lineage and your generations unborn will be victims of the storm you helped create today…irrespective of political leanings or preferences.

Because this volte farce is totally meaningless to me.
