Retired Archdeacon of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) Venerable Emmanuel Ajayi has died at the age of 86.
He died on Thursday, 4 June, at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Lokoja, Kogi State.
His son Omeiza Ajayi confirmed the death in a statement on Monday.
He said his father “did not retreat” and “did not surrender” but “completed his assignment and went home as a soldier goes home after a long and honourable campaign”.
Emmanuel Ajayi served in ministry for 41 years across Lagos, Zambia, Kwara, Ondo and Kogi states. He worked under seven bishops during his career.
He was involved in church planting in several locations and also served in leadership roles in the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) during different postings.
He worked as Diocesan Chaplain of Choir Masters and Organists and also served with the Boys’ Brigade in Nigeria, where he worked with young people.
He was also involved in translating the Yoruba hymn book and Anglican liturgy into Ebira language.
Between 1993 and 1996, he organised Ebira literacy classes in Okene and Ihima.
He retired in 2010 after reaching 70 but continued ministry work through teaching, counselling and prayer outside formal church duties.
Funeral activities will begin on Thursday, 11 June, with an Afternoon of Tributes and Wake Keep at Peace House, Irivogo, Oboroke, Ihima, Okehi Local Government Area, Kogi State.
The funeral service will hold on Friday, 12 June, at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Oboroke, Ihima.
He is survived by his wife, five children, grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and people who, according to the family, called him “Daddy.”
