Former vice chancellor of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) AbdulGaniyu Ambali is dead.
Mr Ambali died in the early hours of Saturday at his residence in Oloje Estate, Ilorin, Kwara State. He was 68.
His death was announced by the vice chancellor of the University of Ilorin Wahab Egbewole through a statement issued by the institution’s director of corporate affairs Kunle Akogun.
According to the statement Ambali, who served as the university’s ninth vice chancellor from 2012 to 2017, died after a brief illness.
Reacting to the development, Mr Egbewole said the former vice chancellor’s death was a loss not only to the University of Ilorin but also to Kwara State University, where he served as chairman and pro-chancellor.
He also sympathised with Ambali’s family and the people of the Ilorin Emirate and urged members of the university community to attend his Janazah.
Before his death, AbdulGaniyu Ambali was chairman and pro-chancellor of Kwara State University.
Born on November 29, 1957, in Ilorin, he began his education at Pakata Primary School before attending Government Secondary School, Jalingo.
He obtained a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Ahmadu Bello University in 1981 and later earned a master’s degree and PhD in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Liverpool.
Ambali started his academic career at the University of Maiduguri before joining the University of Ilorin, where he rose to become professor of veterinary medicine and pioneer dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
He also served as chairman of the Association of West African Universities and was a fellow of the College of Veterinary Surgeons of Nigeria.
His Janazah is scheduled to hold at his residence in Oloje Estate, Ilorin.
