Former minister of education Oby Ezekwesili on Wednesday reflected on the death of actor Alex Ekubo during a service of songs held in his honour in Lagos.
Speaking at the event, Mrs Ezekwesili said it was difficult to stand before mourners to pay tribute to someone younger than her generation.
She said there were no words that could fully comfort the late actor’s mother, wife, siblings and other family members.
“Look at the wife, look at the sisters, the brother, the mom, especially with whom I spoke, and have anything meaningful to say. When deaths like this happen, the only thing that a child of God would be able to do is to remember the sovereignty of God,” she said.
According to her, only faith in God can help explain a loss such as Ekubo’s.
“The one that I want to tell you is that in Psalm 116, I think verse 15, He says, ‘Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of the saints.’ When we think of all that has been spoken of your son today, of your husband, of your daughter, we call them saints,” she added.
Ezekwesili also cited Isaiah 57:1, saying believers find comfort in the belief that God understands circumstances beyond human understanding.
The service of songs took place at The Monarch Event Centre in Lekki, Lagos, with family members, friends, entertainers and dignitaries in attendance.
Among those present were actresses Funke Akindele, Kate Henshaw, Chioma Akpotha, Nancy Isime, Ruth Kadiri and Ini Edo. Actors IK Ogbonna and Stan Nze also attended, alongside pastors Ituah Ighodalo and Jerry Eze.
Gospel singers including Nathaniel Bassey, Mercy Chinwo, Moses Bliss, Peterson Okopi and Ebuka Songs ministered during the programme.
Alexx Ekubo died on May 11 at a Lagos hospital after battling kidney cancer. He was 40.
His wake-keep is scheduled for June 17 at his family home in Ujari Village, Arochukwu, Abia State, while his burial will take place on June 18 in his hometown.
