Nollywood stars gathered in Lagos on Wednesday to honour actor Alexx Ekubo at a service of songs held in his memory at the Monarch Event Centre, Lekki.
The event marked the beginning of the funeral rites announced by the actor’s family following his death on May 11 at the age of 40.
In a statement released days earlier, the family disclosed that the service of songs would hold on June 10 with guests dressed in white. A wake keep is scheduled for June 17, while the actor will be laid to rest on June 18 in his hometown of Arochukwu, Abia State. An interment and reception will follow after the burial.
As expected, many of Ekubo’s colleagues and friends attended the gathering dressed in white to celebrate his life and pay their respects.
Among those present were IK Ogbonna, Ini Edo, Funke Akindele, Nancy Isime, Yomi Casual, Ayo Makun, Omoni Oboli, Ruth Kadiri, Kate Henshaw, Ebuka Obi Uchendu, Mbong Amata, Stan Nze and his wife Blessing Obasi, Nkechi Blessing, Bambam, Funny Bone, Uti Nwachukwu and Chigul.
News of Ekubo’s death broke last month, shocking fans and colleagues across the entertainment industry.
In a statement announcing his death, the family said the actor died at Evercare Hospital, Lagos, from complications arising from advanced metastatic kidney cancer after a brief battle with the illness.
His death also renewed attention on his absence from social media. Ekubo had not posted on Instagram since 2024, leading to speculation among fans about his whereabouts.
At the time, his friend Oma Nnadi responded to enquiries about him, urging people to stop searching for him online and insisting that he was healthy and doing well.
Ekubo rose to prominence after emerging first runner up at the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition. He went on to build a successful acting career, featuring in films such as Weekend Getaway, Lagos Cougars, Omo Ghetto: The Saga and The First Lady.
Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, friends and fans, many remembering him for his contributions to Nollywood and the impact he made during his career.
