Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has reacted to reports of the death of Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo.

News of the actor’s death circulated online on Tuesday, with reports claiming he died after battling kidney cancer. He was 40.

In a Facebook post, Mr Sowore condoled with Ekubo’s family, friends and fans.
“My profound condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Nollywood star Alexx Ekubo, who I understand passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer,” he wrote.

Sowore said although he never met the actor personally, he remembered watching one of his movies during a flight from New York to Dubai.
“He was a rare talent whose presence lit up the screen effortlessly. May he rest in power!” he added.

The reports came months after concerns were raised over Ekubo’s absence from social media.

The actor, known for being active online, had not posted on his Instagram page for more than a year, leading to questions from fans about his whereabouts.

Alexx Ekubo rose to fame after emerging first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition.

He later featured in films including Weekend Getaway, Lagos Cougars, The Bling Lagosians, A Sunday Affair and Omo Ghetto: The Saga.

In 2021, he got engaged to US-based model Fancy Acholonu. The relationship ended later that year after Acholonu announced the cancellation of their wedding plans.
