Rivers summons Apostle Chinyere over planned marriage of autistic daughter

OPM founder Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere

Rivers State Government has summoned the founder of Omega Power Ministries (OPM) Chibuzor Chinyere over plans to arrange the marriage of his adopted autistic daughter.

The intervention followed reactions to reports that the cleric had begun plans to find a husband for the 21-year-old.

The meeting was held on Tuesday in Port Harcourt and was convened by the Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation. It was attended by stakeholders, including the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Rivers State branch.

Permanent secretary in the ministry Lauretta Dimpka said the action by the cleric raised concerns about compliance with laws guiding child protection and the rights of persons with disabilities.

She said that although the move may have been intended to help, it did not meet legal requirements.

“While the cleric acted in good faith, some of his actions fall short of the legal requirements and protections guaranteed for children and persons with disabilities,” she said.

Dimpka cited the Child’s Rights Act, the Persons with Disabilities Act and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act as laws that must be followed in matters involving minors and vulnerable persons.

She said the government invited the cleric after the issue gained attention online.

Dimpka also directed all orphanage operators and childcare providers in the state to register with the ministry and obtain approval.

“All orphanages and children’s homes operating in the state must be duly registered to ensure adherence to child protection protocols,” she said.

She added that the meeting was part of efforts to enforce compliance and protect children and persons with disabilities.

In his response, Apostle Chinyere admitted lapses and said he was not aware of the requirements.

“This meeting is an eye-opener. I have been doing things without knowing that they were wrong. Now I understand better,” he said.

He said he would take steps to comply with the law.

The cleric had earlier announced the suspension of plans to arrange marriages for his adopted autistic children.

He also said he would engage medical professionals to support their care.

The ministry said the engagement forms part of its efforts to ensure compliance with child protection laws in the state.
