Former Rivers State Commissioner for Health Princewill Chike has been appointed the 10th vice chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT).
The appointment was approved by the university’s Governing Council following the completion of the selection process.
A statement issued on Thursday by the institution’s Public Relations Officer Sam Kpenu said the appointment was made by the 17th Governing Council in line with the provisions of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and the University of Port Harcourt Act.
According to the statement, the process involved a Search Team and a Joint Council-Senate Selection Board, which carried out their duties in line with the regulations guiding the appointment of vice chancellors in Nigerian universities.
Mr Chike served as commissioner for health during the administration of former Rivers State governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike.
He will succeed Owunari Georgewill, whose tenure as the university’s ninth vice chancellor ends on July 13.
Georgewill is expected to preside over his final convocation ceremony as vice chancellor on June 5 and June 6.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council Mao Ohuabunwa congratulated Princewill Chike on his appointment and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the institution.
Chike is expected to assume office as the university’s 10th vice chancellor on July 13.
