Reactions have followed the announcement by former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel that he will seek re-election to the Senate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mr Daniel, who represents Ogun East Senatorial District, disclosed on Tuesday that he had obtained his nomination and expression of interest forms under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Today, I picked up my nomination and expression of interest forms as I seek to return to the Nigerian Senate, continuing my efforts to provide effective and responsive representation for the people of Ogun East Senatorial District,” he wrote on X.
Daniel served as governor of Ogun State from 2003 to 2011 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He later returned to elective office in 2023 when he was elected senator for Ogun East.
His latest declaration has drawn mixed reactions on social media, with some users questioning the continued participation of long-serving politicians in elective offices.
One commenter wrote, “Chief start an NGO to help the people of your state you failed to help as Governor, start fishing or farming or something else. Your life has a purpose other than politics. The leaders of tomorrow have grown but their parents like you won’t allow the young ones get in.”
Another user wrote, “Just read the reply you are getting and tell me what you think? But I know you guys have no shame as far as you keep getting the money, security, steal and feel untouchable you are good.”
A third commenter said, “What effective and responsive representation of the people of Ogun East Senatorial District are you talking about? Governor for 8 years, nothing to show for it. The country has turned upside down, yet milking the nation is the ultimate goal.”
Another user wrote, “The looting continues… at 70 plus please go and play with your grandchildren and enjoy the money you have made.”
One more commenter said, “This is Nigeria major problem, career politicians. We need to stop this lootings and extravagant allowances, to discourage this type of playbook. This is a former governor, now aspiring to be a Senator.”
Gbenga Daniel’s declaration also comes amid reported political tensions within the Ogun State chapter of the APC, including discussions over the Ogun East senatorial ticket and alignments ahead of the 2027 election.
