Former Ogun State governor Ibikunle Amosun has denied reports that he asked aspirants to step down for him at a meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun Central.
In a statement issued by his media office, Mr Amosun said reports of the April 23 meeting held at the residence of Olusegun Osoba in Abeokuta misrepresented what happened.
He said the meeting was convened by him following claims about his possible participation in the 2027 general elections.
According to him, three aspirants for the Ogun Central senatorial seat had earlier met him to seek support and had indicated they would step down if he decided to contest.
“They volunteered that if I am interested in contesting for the office, they would withdraw their candidacy,” he said.
Amosun, however, said he did not ask any of them to withdraw.
“Nowhere throughout the meeting did I request anyone to withdraw from the race for me because that would be undemocratic and unacceptable,” he said.
He added that he would not take part in a primary election with a predetermined outcome.
“I would not be part of a primary election whose result is predetermined,” he said.
Amosun also said he has contested and won elections as governor of Ogun State and as a senator.
He urged the media to verify information before reporting political developments.
