Like Burna Boy, Wizkid cuts ties with Afrobeats genre

Grammy Award-winning singer, Ayodeji Balogun, better Wizkid, has joined his colleague Burna Boy to clarify that he is not an Afrobeats artiste.

The ‘Essence’ star said this on his Instagram story on Saturday in which he announced that his next album is ready and warned fans not to expect an Afrobeats version of him on the project.

He urged fans of Afrobeats not to download his new album.

He wrote, “Album done! See you soon b*tches!

“And abeg if you like Pakurumo Wizkid, don’t download this new album. In fact, delete me from your playlist and your life!

“If you like Afrobeats, don’t download my album. I’m not a f*cking Afrobeats artiste. I am not Afro anything.”

Recall that in a July 2022 interview on the Million Dollar Worth of Game podcast Burna Boy stated that his genre of music is called Afrofusion and not Afrobeats as assumed by many.

According to Burna Boy, because his music genre originated in Africa does not make it Afrobeats.

He also said Africa has so many genres of music, adding that generalising it all as Afrobeats is a “disservice to other artistes” in other genres.
