Reality TV star and actress Queen Atang has opened up on her outfit at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, AMVCA, which later went viral online.
Speaking in an interview with BBC Pidgin, Queen said the dress, designed by Toyin Lawani’s Tiannah Empire and made with bread-inspired elements, was heavy and emotionally overwhelming to wear.
She said, “I am that girl that wore 500 loaves of bread. That cloth was heavy. I first cried but i said i have to put myself together to wear this cloth. I wasn’t the one that made the dress, Tiannah Empire did. All i did was call and ask if my cloth was ready. She said it wasn’t ready but it will soon be. Then she said i should come and fit my dress, which i did. I think it took her weeks to get the dress ready but for me, the weight of that dress almost broke my waist. If you check my back, i have a serious wound because that bread is very very heavy. I literally cried while wearing that dress. The first few seconds i wore the dress, i removed it and cried well before i said i was ready to wear the cloth.”
Queen said she initially did not plan to attend the event but later agreed after encouragement from her designer, who also insisted on a bold concept for the appearance.
She added that she arrived after the red carpet had closed but still attended the event and took photos despite the challenges of the outfit.
The actress said she did not expect the dress to gain global attention, noting that she only realised the scale of the reaction after it began circulating widely online.
Guinness World Records also joined the online conversation after commenting on a video of the outfit shared on social media. The organisation wrote, “Well, we do have a record for the largest cake dress … hmmm.” The comment referenced its existing category for the largest cake dress, though there was no official confirmation or record attempt linked to the outfit.
Queen said the viral attention came as a surprise, as her focus was simply on promoting her business through the creative idea.
