Akinola Davies Jr.’s award-winning drama My Father’s Shadow will return to Nigerian cinemas on June 5, for a limited re-release following strong audience demand.
The film is being distributed by FilmOne Entertainment in partnership with Fatherland Productions.
It was announced in a collaboration post by FilmOne Entertainment on Instagram on Wednesday.
The post read: “We’re running it back! Following widespread public demand, My Father’s Shadow will return to Nigerian cinemas from 5th June 2026 for a special limited re-release from @wearefatherland and @filmoneng.
“The film swept the 2026 AMVCAs, winning best movie, director, writing (movie), music/score and sound design. Initially released in 16 states across the country from September to October 2025, Nigeria was the first country in the world to show the film widely in cinemas.
“My Father’s Shadow is set in the aftermath of the historic June 12 1993 Nigerian election crisis, a date that has since become Nigeria’s Democracy Day. This re-release invites audiences to revisit the acclaimed film as a living archive of memory and nationhood ahead of June 12.”
Directed by Akinola Davies Jr, the film follows a father and his two sons navigating life during the political tension that followed the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election. It explores family relationships, memory and survival within a period of national uncertainty.
The film features Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù in a leading role alongside other cast members.
It first gained wider attention during its festival run and later became one of the most recognised titles at the 2026 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards.
Internationally, the film has also continued to gain attention following earlier festival success, with reports noting recognition at global events such as Cannes and the BAFTAs during its wider awards run, where it received critical acclaim for direction and storytelling, even beyond Nigeria’s award circuit.
The re-release is scheduled ahead of Democracy Day and will also include archival materials, cultural events, merchandise and behind the scenes content tied to the film.
