Don Jazzy responds to claims of artiste neglect in Mavin Records

Music executive Don Jazzy has addressed claims that his record label Mavin Records sidelines some of its artistes in favour of others.

He spoke during a YouTube session with Crea8torium, where he reacted to discussions around how artistes are managed within record labels.

Don Jazzy said the idea that a label would intentionally ignore its own artistes does not align with how the business works.

“The idea that we’ll have people and not want to prioritise them is not a real thing,” he said. “When we sign artists, we want to make money from those artists and want those artists to make money for themselves.”

He added that leaving a signed artiste inactive would go against the label’s interests.

“It would seem like taking money and locking it away or throwing it because it doesn’t make sense,” he said.

On concerns that some artistes appear less active than others on the label, he said it often comes down to the individuals involved.

“If you see an artist in Mavin and the artist only releases one or two songs in a year, just know that it is the artist that decided that,” he said.

He also linked this to personal challenges that some artistes may experience.

“Most of the time, they actually have imposter syndrome. It’s normal, we’re all human beings.”

Earlier in the year, former Mavin artiste Crayon made public comments online following his exit from the label. He raised concerns that included disputes over royalties and creative direction, and suggested that his influence as an artiste had been affected within the label. He later deleted the posts and indicated that his account may have been compromised.

Mavin Records, founded in 2012 by Don Jazzy after the end of MoHits Records, is home to several Nigerian artistes including Rema and Ayra Starr.
