Singer Ayra Starr has said she avoided dating in high school because she did not want anyone to later describe her as an ex girlfriend.
Speaking in an interview with Quenlin Blackwell, the 23-year-old said many of the people who showed interest in her had what she believed were hidden intentions.
“I didn’t date in high school because I didn’t want to be anybody’s ex. I’m such a baddie, like I knew, like a lot of guys were trying, and I was hmm, why are you trying? That means you must have an ulterior motive,” she said.
Born Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, Ayra Starr also spoke about a private relationship that influenced her recent song ‘Where Do We Go’.
“‘Where Do We Go’ is inspired by a very secret relationship I had for a while, where it was very much like nobody knew what was going on — only us,” she said.
“My friends were telling me to wrap it up, but I was like, ‘No, I love him’.”
She also said she has a type, but does not place much importance on physical appearance when choosing a partner.
“Yeah, I have a type. You have to have a type,” she said. “To be honest, my type is not too physical like that because you can be fine and not have sense. It is the truth,” she said.
Ayra Starr was officially signed to Mavin Records in 2020 after being discovered on Instagram by Don Jazzy in December 2019. She began working at Mavin Studios that same year and was officially unveiled as a new artist to the public on January 21, 2021, ahead of her debut self-titled EP release on January 22, 2021.
