Buhari travels out with Tinubu, reads his newspaper

Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Tinubu

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday arrived Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire for the 5th European Union-African Union (EU-AU) Summit.

Among those who accompanied the President on the trip was former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu.

Both men are believed to have developed a newfound bromance amidst reports of a struggle for control of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) which allegedly pitted them against each other.

Buhari was said to have side-lined Tinubu and others who worked to get him elected in 2015 in favour of a cabal made up of northerners and old allies.

The former governor, who has the title of national leader of APC, had allegedly launched a campaign against the President and plotting.

His statement last week that the APC would not give Buhari an automatic ticket to contest the 2019 presidential election was taken in some quarters as a clear sign of animosity.

Pictures released by Aso Rock on Tuesday, however, show the two men sitting side by side on the Presidential Jet on the flight to Abuja while the President reads a copy of The Nation newspapers owned by Tinubu.

The same paper was said to have been commissioned to write anti-Buhari stories in a bid to portray him as unfit to continue presiding over the country.

On the plane with Buhari and Tinubu were Governors Emmanuel Udom of Akwa Ibom and Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi State.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama led Nigerian delegation to receive the President at the airport in Abidjan.

President of the African Development Bank, Akinwunmi Adesina; other Federal Executive Council members; some embassy officials as well as representatives of Nigerians resident in Cote d’Ivoire, were also at the airport.
