Why I miss Mavin Records – Tiwa Savage

Tiwa Savage

Singer Tiwa Savage has said she misses her time at Mavin Records, noting that the label provided a strong sense of emotional support that she did not fully appreciate until she left.

She made the comment during an episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast hosted by Joey Akan, where she discussed her experiences in the music industry and reflected on her time at Mavin Records.

Tiwa Savage said she did not fully understand how important emotional support within a record label was until she left Mavin Records.

According to her, while she was signed to the label, she often relied on label boss Don Jazzy and her colleagues for support during difficult moments, especially when dealing with online controversies.

She said, “Who you signed to is very important and I didn’t appreciate it until after I left Mavin. Whenever there’s a controversy online I’d run to Don Jazzy’s room, sit on the floor or bed with other Mavin acts and we would talk about it. I would cry if I had to cry and we would get through it.

“But being with a [foreign] label, they don’t really care about your personal stuff. So, I can’t really go to the Empire office and cry. I miss that part it.”

She added that artistes should carefully consider whether a record label truly cares about their wellbeing or only sees them as a business.

Tiwa Savage joined Mavin Records in 2012 and left in 2019 before signing with Universal Music Group.

Despite leaving the label, she has previously described Mavin Records as family and maintained a cordial relationship with members of the label.
