Skit maker and singer Nasboi has appealed to Nigerians to stop attacking celebrities who choose to remain silent on political matters.
In a post shared on his X account on Thursday, the entertainer asked the public to understand the risks public figures face when they speak out on national issues.
Nasboi referenced comedian and activist Mr Macaroni, who became one of the prominent voices during the 2020 End SARS protests and has continued to speak on governance and social issues in Nigeria.
According to Nasboi, the treatment Mr Macaroni received after speaking up has discouraged many celebrities from getting involved in political conversations.
“People wey get sense, make we reason this matter. Una dey always drag celebrities for not speaking up, but make I remind una of Mr Macaroni. See how dem maltreat am just because he spoke up for everybody. Yet na still people mock am and insult am. You think say other celebrities no dey see all those things?
“No be everybody get mind to talk. You have to accept that. And make we no forget, just like some of una no dey interested in politics, na so some celebrities no like to involve politically. Celebrities are humans like you,” he stated.
Mr Macaroni, whose real name is Debo Adedayo, was among celebrities actively involved in the 2020 End SARS protests against police brutality. In February 2021, he was arrested alongside other protesters at the Lekki toll gate during a demonstration against the reopening of the facility.
Over the years, the comedian has remained vocal on governance and social issues, frequently drawing mixed reactions online from Nigerians who either praise or criticise his stance.
The entertainer, born Nasiru Bolaji, first gained popularity through comedy skits online before moving fully into music. He is known for songs such as ‘Umbrella’ featuring Wande Coal and also drew attention in 2024 after embarking on a campaign across Nigerian states to get a music collaboration with Davido.
