Kano emirs Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado-Bayero have suspended their planned Eid-el-Kabir durbar activities following security concerns in the state.
The decision came after both camps earlier announced separate durbar celebrations for the Sallah period, raising fears of possible clashes among supporters.
Representatives of the two emirs announced the suspension separately after security agencies advised against the gatherings.
Speaking on behalf of Emir Sanusi, the Matawallen Kano Aliyu Ibrahim said security reports indicated that some people planned to use the celebrations to disrupt peace in Kano.
He said the emirate council decided to suspend the activities to prevent violence and maintain peace during the festive period.
On the side of Emir Bayero, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba Aminu Dan’agundi confirmed that their camp had also cancelled all durbar plans.
He said the decision followed directives from the police and other security agencies aimed at maintaining peace across the state.
According to him, they decided to comply with the order to avoid any situation that could lead to unrest.
Before the suspension, both emirs had held separate Hawan Sallah processions on Wednesday using different routes and locations in Kano.
The planned durbar activities had raised tension among residents because some of the routes could have brought supporters of both camps together.
Earlier, the Kano State Police Command had asked both emirs to suspend the planned durbar, Hawan Daushe and Hawan Nassarawa processions as part of efforts to maintain law and order during the Eid celebrations.
