Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Igboho has announced the start of forest security operations by his outfit, Iru Ekun Security Network, across the South-west and Yoruba-speaking parts of Kogi and Kwara states.
Mr Igboho made the announcement in a video circulated online on Monday while addressing representatives of the group.
“We’ve started already, there’s no delay. Anyone found in any of our forests is a criminal,” he said.
He added that the group’s operations were aimed at removing terrorists and other criminal elements from forests in the region.
“We will start work in all forests in the South-west including Kogi and Kwara states. Enough is enough for terrorism entering our forests,” he said.
The activist asked coordinators of the security network to inform state governments and security agencies in their areas about the group’s activities.
He said the outfit would work with security agencies and maintain discipline during operations.
Igboho also praised some Yoruba traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife and the Olubadan of Ibadan, for supporting the initiative.
He thanked President Bola Tinubu and claimed insecurity in the South-west was politically motivated.
“What is happening in the South-west is politically motivated. Some politicians brought in these terrorists to disturb the peace of Yoruba land,” he said.
His comments come amid renewed concerns over insecurity in parts of Oyo State following the recent abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier confirmed that one abducted teacher was killed, while security agencies arrested suspects linked to the attack.
Sunday Igboho came into national attention in 2021 after issuing an ultimatum to suspected criminal herders in parts of Ibarapa area of Oyo State over allegations of killings and kidnappings.
In July 2021, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) raided his residence in Ibadan. He later fled Nigeria and was arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic.
He regained his freedom in 2023 after legal proceedings in Benin Republic.
