Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the February 25 poll Peter Obi on Thursday joined the world in celebrating Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka on his 89th birthday.

Mr Obi shared a photo on Twitter from his visit to the renowned playwright back in May.

He said the octogenarian has remained a revered figure, well respected in Nigeria and all over the world.

“My respected dear father Prof. Wole Soyinka, I join your family, friends and admirers in celebrating with you as you mark your 89th birthday today,” Obi began.

“We thank God for the gift of your life in good health.

“As a person and literary icon, you have remained a revered and renowned figure, held in very high esteem by your compatriots and others all over the world. I salute your commitment and contributions in the struggle for a better Nigeria and humanity.”

The former Anambra State governor added, “While wishing you many happy returns of this day, I pray God to grant you more health of mind and body as you continue to positively contribute to our collective nation-building efforts.”

On May 7, Obi visited Soyinka over the latter’s clash with Obi’s supporters famously called Obidients.

Soyinka got into the bad books of the Obidients when he criticised the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate at the 2023 poll, Datti Baba-Ahmed, for saying then-President-elect Bola Tinubu should not be sworn in.

According to Soyinka, Baba-Ahmed’s comments were fascist.

Tweeting about the visit, Obi said he had an enriching discussion with the professor.
