Sheikh Gumi denies supporting banditry, threatens legal action

Ahmad Gumi

Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi has denied supporting banditry in Nigeria, distancing himself from statements and video clips circulating online.

In a statement issued in Kaduna on Saturday, Sheikh Gumi said the materials linking him to support for banditry were fake, manipulated and doctored.

He said some of his media interviews, lectures and comments on insecurity had been misrepresented by internet content creators seeking attention online.

“I hereby state unequivocally that any video clip, written statement, or message attributed to me, whether directly or by innuendo, suggesting support for, justification of, protection of, or advocacy for banditry in Nigeria or anywhere else does not emanate from me,” he said.

The cleric accused some individuals and groups of twisting his comments for ethnic and sectional interests.

Gumi reaffirmed his loyalty to Nigeria and urged the public, media organisations and security agencies to disregard materials circulating in his name.

He also warned that anyone who continues to spread false information against him after the statement would face legal action.

The cleric expressed hope that Nigeria would overcome its security challenges and called for collective efforts to address insecurity, poverty, ignorance and social injustice.

He also prayed for comfort for victims of violence across the country.
