Former Kaduna Central lawmaker Shehu Sani has asked the Kwara State Government to reconsider its plan to file criminal charges against former Senate President Bukola Saraki over the 2018 Offa robbery.
Mr Sani made the appeal in a post on X, addressing Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq. He said the move could have consequences and urged caution.
“I wish to appeal to the Governor of Kwara State… to drop the idea of filing a criminal charge against Senator Bukola Saraki and others over the 2018 Offa robbery incident,” he wrote.
He referred to his past experience with legal cases, saying he had been taken to several courts in Kaduna and faced civil and criminal charges.
“I wish to appeal to the Governor of Kwara State my Friend and Brother, His Excellency Abdulrahaman Abdulrasaq to drop the idea of filling a Criminal Charge against Senator Bukola Saraki and others over the 2018 Offa Robbery Incident,” he wrote.
He added that public office holders should be careful in the use of power.
“Power should be exercised with caution. Tomorrow is not far from today,” Shehu Sani concluded.
The development follows a 20-count charge filed by the Kwara State Government against Saraki and former governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.
Others listed in the case include Yusuf Abdulwahab and Alabi Olalekan.
The charges are linked to the April 5, 2018 robbery in Offa, where armed men attacked banks and a police station. At least 33 people were killed, including police officers.
In September 2024, a Kwara State High Court convicted five persons for armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms and culpable homicide in connection with the incident.
Saraki has denied any involvement in the robbery.
He said earlier investigations by federal authorities did not find evidence linking him to the crime.
The case is expected to come up before the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin.
