Singer and saxophonist Lagbaja turned 66 on Tuesday, May 19.
Known for his signature mask and socially conscious music, the veteran entertainer remains one of the most unique figures in Nigeria’s music industry decades after he first gained fame.
Here are seven things to know about him as he marks his 66th birthday.
- 1. His real name is Bisade Ologunde
The masked music star was born Bisade Ologunde in Lagos in 1960. Though widely known as Lagbaja, he kept his real identity away from public attention for years. - 2. “Lagbaja” means “nobody in particular”
The name Lagbaja comes from Yoruba and represents the ordinary man. His famous mask symbolises the faceless and voiceless people in society. - 3. He built a unique sound called Africano
While many people describe his music as Afrobeat or Afrojazz, Lagbaja preferred the term “Africano.” His sound blends Yoruba percussion, jazz, highlife, horns and socially conscious lyrics. - 4. He became famous in the 1990s
Lagbaja rose to prominence after releasing his self titled debut album in 1993. Songs from albums like C’est Une African Thing helped make him one of Nigeria’s most recognisable music acts of the late 1990s and early 2000s. - 5. He is known for music with social messages
Much like Fela Kuti, Lagbaja used music to speak about bad leadership, inequality and everyday struggles in Nigeria. Many of his songs mixed humour with criticism of society and government. - 6. He founded the famous Motherlan’ club in Ikeja
