23 and growing in purpose, Youngest Nigerian monarch Oba Oloyede Adekoya marks birthday

Ondo monarch Oba Oloyede Adekoya

Oba Oloyede Adekoya, the Arujale-Ojima of Okeluse Kingdom in Ondo State, has marked his 23rd birthday.

The monarch shared a message on Instagram on Friday, thanking God and his ancestors for their support since ascending the throne.

“Today, I celebrate the grace, mercy and protection of Eledumare over my life. I remain grateful to my ancestors for their divine guidance and strength through every step of my journey,” he wrote.

“Another year older, wiser and stronger. The journey is still young, but the grace has been immense.”

Oba Adekoya, regarded as Nigeria’s youngest monarch, ascended the throne at the age of 16 after the death of his father, the previous ruler of the kingdom.

As the only son among four children, tradition required him to succeed his father. His appointment was later approved by the Ondo State Government.

Oba Oloyede Adekoya drew attention in January after his palace warned members of the public against addressing him with informal terms such as “bro” or “blood.”

In a statement issued by his chief of staff Adefemi Olorunfemi, the palace said the monarch should be addressed strictly as “His Royal Majesty.”

The palace also stated that the king’s age should not be used as a reason for casual remarks, noting that the throne he occupies is sacred in Yoruba tradition.
