The absence of Chief Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun of the Yaba Magistrate’s Court on Monday stalled the trial of Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti.

Magistrate Olatunbosun was said to have resumed her administrative leave.

The Lagos State Police Command arraigned Seun on May 16, 2023. He was charged with assault on a police officer, an offence contrary to Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act.

In the absence of the chief Magistrate, the registrar adjourned the case till September 27, 2023, for continuation of proceedings.

On May 24, Magistrate Olatunbosun ruled that the police cannot be the complainant and also the prosecutor of the case. She, therefore, requested the Directorate of Public Prosecutions’ advice to continue the case.

Adjourning the case till July 3, 2023, she said: “I need the advice of the DPP to know whether he should be prosecuted or not.”
