Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has congratulated his deputy Obafemi Hamzat after he emerged as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 election.
Governor Sanwo-Olu gave the congratulatory message in a statement issued on Friday following Deputy Governor Hamzat’s victory in the party’s direct primary election held across the state on Thursday.
Hamzat became the first deputy governor in Lagos State to secure the APC governorship ticket.
“On behalf of my family, I congratulate Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat on his emergence as the standard bearer of our great party, the All Progressives Congress, in next year’s gubernatorial election in Lagos,” Sanwo-Olu said.
“It is my belief that your personal vision for the continuous growth and development of our state will be for the benefit of all.”
The governor said Hamzat’s emergence reflected the confidence party members and residents had in him.
He also commended APC members for their conduct during the primary election and urged them to remain united ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“There is still more work ahead of us as a party, and I urge all members to remain united and committed to the progress of Lagos State and the success of our great party,” he added.
Hamzat defeated his rival Olanrewaju Jim-Kamal in the primary election conducted across the 245 wards in the state.
Announcing the results at the APC secretariat in Ikeja, the chairman of the electoral committee, Jonathan Temlong, said Hamzat scored 657,917 votes, while Jim-Kamal got one vote.
Temlong said 657,974 voters were accredited for the exercise, which he described as peaceful and conducted in line with party guidelines.
According to the results announced, Hamzat recorded votes across the 20 local government areas, including Alimosho, Ikorodu, Kosofe, Mushin, Surulere and Eti-Osa.
Declaring him winner, Temlong said Hamzat had satisfied the requirements of the APC constitution and guidelines.
Lagos APC chairman Cornelius Ojelabi also praised party members and officials for the conduct of the primary, saying it reflected the unity of the party ahead of the 2027 election.
