Former minister of transportation Rotimi Amaechi has agreed to serve as running mate to African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar ahead of the next general election.

The development was confirmed on Saturday by the immediate past chairman of the ADC in Rivers State Leader Sampson.

Speaking with Daily Post, Mr Sampson confirmed that Mr Amaechi had accepted the vice-presidential role when asked about the development, responding simply, “Yes.”

Amaechi had contested the ADC presidential primary election but lost to former vice president Atiku, who emerged as the party’s presidential candidate.

Before the primary election, Amaechi had publicly stated that he did not purchase the ADC presidential nomination form with the intention of later becoming a vice-presidential candidate.

Following the primary, Amaechi rejected the outcome of the exercise, while some party members also raised concerns over claims that the process was manipulated in favour of Atiku.

Reports indicate that talks between both politicians resumed after the primary election as efforts were made to unite members of the party ahead of the general election.

With Rotimi Amaechi now reportedly accepting the offer to be Atiku’s running mate, the ADC is expected to make an official announcement on the joint ticket soon.
