Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi

Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has commiserated with families and friends of victims of the building collapse in Onitsha, the commercial city of Anambra.

The three-storey building, which was still under construction before the fall, was said to have collapsed at about 1:45 pm Wednesday.

Police said on Thursday that the death toll in the building collapse had risen to five.

Mr Obi, in a tweet on Thursday condoled with the deceased’s families and friends.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those who lost dear ones in the building collapse in Onitsha,” he said, “for the safety of our people, it is important for building constructions to be handled by professionals and in consonance with building codes & standard.”

Eyewitnesses had said the fall might be connected to weak building materials.

Police, however, say the case is under investigation.
