National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has elected Afeez Akinteye as its new national president at the association’s 2026 convention held at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja.
Akinteye, a student of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH) and former senate president of NANS, defeated four other candidates in the election.
He succeeds Olushola Oladoja, who completed his tenure as president of the association.
According to the election results, Akinteye polled 349 votes to defeat Aminu Maipanpo, who scored 12 votes, while Odumosu Olumide received 10 votes.
Other candidates in the race included Awoyinpa Elijah of the Federal University of Technology Akure and Opaleye Oladutun of the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta.
The convention was held under security provided by police officers and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Speaking after his election, Akinteye thanked delegates for electing him and promised to continue the work of the outgoing administration.
“The leadership of NANS has conducted our election successfully and the new leadership has emerged. I thank all the delegates for electing me, a student of OAUSTECH, as the new president of NANS,” he said.
He also described the convention as peaceful, noting that there were no reports of violence or disputes during the process.
“Our activities will soon be felt across campuses and the country will know that NANS is active and committed to students’ welfare,” he added.
Outgoing president Oladoja described the election as one of the happiest moments of his tenure and expressed confidence in Akinteye’s leadership.
Chairman of the Independent Convention Planning Committee Omotayo Samuel, said more than 300 delegates, including student union presidents and senate presidents from tertiary institutions across the country, participated in the convention.
