Nigerian footballer slumps, dies during friendly game

Henry Obiekwu

Another tragedy has hit Nigerian football after a former Enugu Rangers player, Henry Obiekwu, slumped and died while playing a friendly game in Enugu, Monday.

Henry was younger brother to ex-international, Kingsley Obiekwu, who represented Nigeria at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

Unlike Kingsley who made eight appearances for the Super Eagles, the deceased had a relatively mute career which couldn’t earn him a call-up from the national team.

According to African Football,  Henry, who played as right-back, asked to be replaced during the friendly match with his youth team, Samba FC, at the UNEC Stadium after complaining of severe chest pain.

He later slumped before being rushed to Eastern Nigeria Medical Centre in Enugu where he was confirmed dead.

Henry’s last club before his death was FC Taraba.
