Atiku picks Okowa as running mate

Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar has picked Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate for the 2023 election.

The former Vice President announced his decision via Twitter on Thursday, saying he looked forward to campaigns around the country with Okowa.

“I am delighted to announce Governor @IAOkowa as my Vice Presidential candidate,” Atiku wrote.

“I look forward to travelling our great country together, engaging with all Nigerians and building a shared future of peace, unity, and prosperity for all. As One We Can Get It Done.”

In 2019, Atiku picked former Anambra State governor Peter Obi as his running mate. Three years after, Mr Obi is seeking the nation’s top job under the platform of Labour Party after resigning from the PDP.

Before Atiku’s announcement, the PDP screened a number of persons for the position including Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike who was the first runner-up at the party’s presidential primary.

Okowa’s calm temperament and acceptability in the south is believed to have played a major role in Atiku’s decision.

The presidential candidate of the governing party, the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu is expected to announce his choice soonest to beat the Friday deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (EFCC).
