Barth Nnaji to attend Supernews conference on oil, gas and insurance sectors

Barth Nnaji

Former Minister of Power and chairman of Geometric Power Limited Barth Nnaji will attend the Supernews Conference and 10th anniversary celebration as special guest of honour.

The event is scheduled for July 7 at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The conference is themed “Local Content & Digitisation: Building Synergy Between Oil & Gas and Insurance Sectors for Inclusive Growth.”

The Commissioner for Insurance and chief executive officer of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) Olusegun Omosehin has also confirmed his participation.

Organisers said the conference will bring together regulators, operators in the oil and gas and insurance sectors, civil society organisations, media practitioners and students.

Managing Director of Universal Insurance Plc Jeff Duru will chair the event, while Group Managing Director of Royal Exchange Plc Idu Okeahialam will deliver the keynote address.

Publisher of Supernews Nigeria Ngozi Onyeakusi said the conference would examine how technology can improve collaboration between the insurance and oil and gas sectors.

According to her, discussions will focus on the implementation of Sections 49 and 50 of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGICD) Act.

The provisions require operators in the oil and gas industry to insure risks related to their operations with insurance companies and brokers registered in Nigeria.

The law also states that operators seeking to place insurance risks offshore must obtain approval from NAICOM after it has determined that local capacity has been exhausted.

To improve compliance with the law, the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and NAICOM introduced guidelines in 2022 aimed at addressing challenges associated with its implementation.

Organisers said the conference would also examine developments in the insurance sector following the enactment of the Nigeria Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025 and the ongoing recapitalisation exercise.

They noted that the reforms are expected to strengthen the capacity of insurance companies and improve their participation in the country’s economy.
