The All Progressives Congress (APC) has unveiled Solomon Adeola, better known as Yayi, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Ogun State.
Yayi, who represents Ogun West in the National Assembly, was presented at a party caucus meeting held at the APC secretariat in Abeokuta.
Governor Dapo Abiodun, who announced the decision, said it followed consultations with party stakeholders and aspirants.
He said the move was aimed at selecting a single candidate from Ogun West.
“Today, those I considered as front-runners in Ogun West have given their consent and bought into the idea,” he said.
“The reason Ogun West has not been able to produce a governor until now is due to a lack of cooperation.”
Governor Abiodun said he had met with other aspirants, including Biodun Akinlade and Gboyega Isiaka, who agreed to support the decision.
He stated that the party held discussions over several months, including meetings with President Bola Tinubu and former Governor Olusegun Osoba.
“The discussions did not just start recently. They began about six months ago,” he said.
“The President asked me which zone I preferred for the next governor, and I said Ogun West because it has not produced a governor.”
Abiodun said the candidate was selected after reviewing those who showed interest in the race.
He added that party members need to align ahead of the election.
In his acceptance speech, Yayi thanked party leaders and pledged to continue the work of past administrations.
He said he would work with party members and the people of the state.
“With the support and cooperation of all, I will not let the party and the state down,” he said.
The meeting was attended by party leaders and stakeholders as part of preparations for the 2027 election.
