Yoruba language actress, Mercy Aigbe, has kept sealed lips over her arrest by policemen at the Olaiya Junction in Osogbo, the Osun State capital on Wednesday.
The policemen were said to have fired three gunshots into the air before whisking the actress and her brother, who drove her in a Honda Accord car, away to an unknown place.
Mercy had been angered by the decision of the police to stop her in the first place. Eyewitnesses said her rather rash response prompted the men in uniform to seize her mobile phone.
The actress – who had a police cap in the car – had called someone who pleaded with the policemen to release her after her car was stopped.
But the actress was said to have spoken harshly to the policemen and this reportedly annoyed them.
The altercation between her and the policemen attracted a huge crowd of people, one of whom told Punch at the scene that the police team which arrested her was in search of ‘Yahoo Yahoo boys’ and Mercy’s brother, who drove the actress, attracted their attention as well as the police cap in the car.
The eyewitness, who identified himself as Adedeji said, “When the policemen got to the junction, they went to the parked car and ordered the driver to roll down the window of the car because it was tinted and they could not identify those in the car.
“Immediately the driver rolled the glasses down Mercy Aigbe rushed out of the car to confront the policemen. They eventually took her and the boy who drove away.”
Acting Police Public Relations Officer in Osun State, Mr. Ajibade Egbedele, later described the episode as a traffic issue which has been settled.
Strangely, Mercy has not made any public comment about the incident hours after it happened.
The actress with a reputation for online crusade like the one she launched after ThisDay Style snubbed her on the list of Nollywood’s best dressed did not drop a line on any of her social media handles.
Rather, she posted an image presumably from a movie location on Instagram with the caption “And it’s a wrap for today!….work continues tomorrow…..tired much!…#lifeofanactress. …Sweetdreams Fam!”
