Osun State Government has deposed Oba Joseph Oloyede as the Apetumodu of Ipetumodu with immediate effect.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Kolapo Alimi.
Mr Alimi said the decision followed consultation, legal review and approval by the State Executive Council.
He stated that the action was taken in line with the Osun State Chiefs Law, as amended and other laws guiding traditional institutions in the state.
According to the government, Oba Joseph Oloyede was convicted in the United States over offences linked to COVID-19 fraud and is serving a prison sentence.
“The decision was reached after due consultation, legal consideration and approval by the State Executive Council,” the statement said.
The government also announced the withdrawal of all instruments of authority earlier issued to the monarch, including the staff of office.
It added that the stool of the Apetumodu of Ipetumodu has been declared vacant pending further steps.
“The government will, in due course, outline the process for succession in line with established customary and legal procedures,” Alimi said.
Security agencies were directed to maintain peace and order in the community.
Residents, kingmakers and other stakeholders were also urged to remain calm and law-abiding.
Ipetumodu is the headquarters of Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State.
