Why I won’t hand over Deeper Life leadership to my sons – Kumuyi

William Kumuyi

General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry Pastor William Kumuyi has dismissed suggestions that any of his children would succeed him as leader of the church.

Pastor Kumuyi addressed the issue in a video shared on Tuesday during a church service while responding to discussions about who would take over the ministry when he steps down.

According to him, the church is not a personal possession that can be handed over to family members.

“Many people were speculating, is he going to hand over the church to his son? Won’t he search for his first son, second son, where are they? Where do they live? Is he not going to hand over the church?” he said.

Kumuyi said leadership in the church should not be based on family ties.

“It’s not his church. And because it’s not his church, Jesus said, ‘Upon this rock, I will build my church.’ It’s the church of the Lord Jesus Christ and nobody has right to hand it over to his son,” he said.

He added that God would determine who succeeds him.

“My friend, it is not always the will of God that you pass it to your son. And there are sons that do not understand that; that leadership in the kingdom is not a family affair.

“Well God will choose, and God will tell who is to have the kingdom,” he said.

Kumuyi also cited examples from the Bible, saying church leadership was not transferred through biological inheritance.

“Peter did not hand over the church to his son. Paul did not have any son or wife, but Paul did not hand over the church to his son. And John did not hand over the church to his son,” he said.

He maintained that leadership transition in the ministry should be guided by God’s direction rather than family succession.
