I want to succeed Buhari without offending him, Tinubu tells Alake

Bola Tinubu

Presidential aspirant Bola Tinubu on Saturday paid a visit to the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, in Abeokuta, Ogun State to seek his royal blessing on his presidential ambition.

The All Progressives Congress chieftain had earlier paid a similar visit to the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, at his Ijebu-Ode palace.

Tinubu told the Alake that he informed President Muhammadu Buhari in January of his intention to contest the presidential election in 2023 following calls from his (Tinubu’s) supporters and friends.

The former Lagos State governor said he did not want his ambition to create bad blood between him and Buhari.

“I told the president I want to replace you and I don’t want to offend you. I told the president that I want to step in his shoes but not step on his toes.

“I told him as the number one citizen, I should start my presidential bid by informing you first, and he (Buhari) told me to inform the whole world, and I have done that,” said Tinubu.

Early this year, Buhari said in an interview on Channels TV that he had a candidate whom he would prefer to succeed him but would not reveal it to save the individual of persecution.
