A taxi driver in Abuja, Gambo Mohammed, was on Friday arraigned in a Karmo Grade I Area Court for allegedly beating up a policewoman during an argument over cab fare.

The 39-year-old resident of Jabi, Abuja, pleaded not guilty to two counts of criminal force and assault leveled on him by the police.

Prosecutor Ijeoma Ukagha told the court that one Inspector Grace Damion of 40 Police Mobile Force Abuja reported the incident at the Utako police station on March 10.

The complainant was said to have boarded Mohammed’s taxi from Dunamis Junction to Jabi on that fateful day.

Ukagha said Mohammed did not respond when asked how much the fare would cost until an argument ensued between them, prompting Mohammed to give the policewoman a punch in the face.

The offence, Ukagha said, contravened the provisions of Section 264 of the Penal Code.

Mohammed was admitted to bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.

The judge, Inuwa Maiwada, adjourned the case until April 15 for hearing.
