Suspected cultists have attacked members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Bayelsa State, killing two in the process and injuring one.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night along School road, Swali in Yenagoa local government area.

The corps members are 30-year-old Popoola Olamide, a graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and an indigene of Oyo State; George Onokpoma and Gbenga Dada.

Popoola was reportedly shot dead on the spot; Onokpoma died at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Yenagoa, while Gbenga is said to be receiving treatment for gunshot wounds at the medical centre.

Eyewitnesses say the room where the corps members were attacked was riddled with bullets.

A resident of the area, who did not want his name mentioned, said the hoodlums, about seven in number, attacked the corps members at about 9pm.

Bayelsa police commissioner, Olushola David, visited the state NYSC secretariat in Yenagoa on Thursday where he met with the coordinator, Lotto Bolade.

Mr Olushola described the killing as ‘shocking’. He also assured that security would be heightened in the state for the safety of NYSC members.

“The police have briefed the State Governor, Seriake Dickson on the incident. There is nobody that will hear of the incident that will not be shocked.

“The corps members in the state may be scared, but please assure them that there will be improved security under my watch,” he said.
