Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Monday inaugurated the Agbura-Oxbow Lake Road and the Oporoma Referral Hospital in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The projects were executed under the administration of Governor Douye Diri.
Speaking at the inauguration of the road, Vice President Osinbajo said he had earlier visited the state in 2022 to flag off the Angiama-Oporoma Bridge across the River Nun.
He said he had doubts at the time due to the terrain but expressed satisfaction that the bridge has been completed.
“I was here about four years ago to do the groundbreaking for the Angiama-Oporoma bridge. We travelled through the forest, and when he said there was going to be a bridge here, I had my doubts,” he said.
“But today, that bridge stands there.”
He said the Agbura-Oxbow Lake Road connects communities in Yenagoa and provides access to the Ogbia area, where the Federal University Otuoke is located, as well as Oloibiri.
He added that the road also links government facilities such as the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board Towers, the Federal Secretariat and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) office in the state.
Governor Diri said the project began in 2022 when Osinbajo was invited to flag it off.
He said the construction created jobs for people in nearby communities and has improved access to riverine areas along the Yenagoa-Oporoma-Ukubie road.
He also said President Bola Tinubu recently visited the state to inaugurate the Angiama-Oporoma Bridge.
According to him, Osinbajo had wanted to attend that event but was out of the country.
He said the former vice president’s presence at the latest inauguration shows the completion of projects he helped to start.
The Oporoma Referral Hospital was also inaugurated during the visit.
