Student beats female lecturer to coma in UNILORIN

A 400 level student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) simply identified as Captain Walz has been arrested after attacking a lecturer in the department of microbiology, faculty of life sciences in her office.

Reports say the student had sought the help of the lecturer, who is his project supervisor, because he did not observe the compulsory students industrial work scheme (SIWES) commonly called industrial training (IT).

It was gathered that the student allegedly entered the lecturer’s office last Thursday and started banging her table, moved closer to her and started slapping her.

The lecturer reportedly tried to escape, but the student kept pursuing her as she ran into an office.

Vice-chancellor of the institution Prof. Sulyman Abdulkareem in a statement on Sunday said the lecturer is now in a stable condition.

The statement which was released by the varsity’s spokesman Kunle Akogun identified the lecturer simply as Mrs Zakariyyah.

The institution said the lecturer is now recuperating in an undisclosed hospital.

“This is to confirm that Mrs Zakariyyah is now relatively stable and recuperating after the ugly incident of Thursday where she was attacked by a 400L male student.

“A visit by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sulyman Abdulkareem, in the company of the Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Professor Oladiji; the Director, University Health Services, Dr Odunola; and a few other staff to the victim and her family, this morning, Saturday, confirmed that,” the statement read.

Abdulkareem described the incident as sad and unfortunate, assuring that justice would be done on the matter.

He ordered proper care of the victim on the bill of the university and reiterated his commitment to the welfare of all staff and law-abiding students of the institution.
