Remi Tinubu distributes professional kits to midwives during Enugu visit

First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for national unity beyond political affiliations, stating that the country’s diversity should be seen as a strength rather than a divide.

She made this call during her two-day working visit to Enugu State where she distributed professional kits to midwives in the South-East geopolitical zone as part of her Renewed Hope Initiative.

Speaking during a meeting with traditional rulers in the state, Mrs Tinubu said leaders must be committed to the welfare of all Nigerians, regardless of their political backgrounds.

“As leaders we are responsible to take care of all Nigeria, political affiliation notwithstanding,” she said.

The First Lady added that no one should feel unsafe or unwelcome in any part of the country.

“Nigeria is a beautiful country and no one should hinder anyone from visiting any part of the country to experience this. We pray our security will improve and Nigeria should get to that place of safety,” she said.

She described traditional rulers as the “eyes and ears of government at the grassroots” and urged them to support her advocacy campaigns against cervical cancer, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and female genital mutilation.

“Irrespective of party affiliation, we have to grow this nation,” she said.

Mrs Tinubu also spoke about new programmes under her Renewed Hope Initiative, including, “Flow with Confidence,” designed to ensure adolescent girls don’t miss school due to their menstrual periods, and the environment club/society, aimed at encouraging students to participate in environmental restoration.

Chairman of the Enugu State traditional council, Samuel Asadu, praised the First Lady’s efforts and reaffirmed support for her husband, President Bola Tinubu.

“For us here in Enugu, we the traditional rulers say, no vacancy in Aso Rock,” he said.

He also noted that unsafe cultural practices that hinder women’s development had been eradicated in the state.

At the distribution ceremony, Mrs Tinubu expressed satisfaction with the completion of the nationwide distribution of professional kits to midwives.

“Since the initial launch in January 2025, we have distributed 50,000 scrubs and 50,000 pairs of crocs to five geopolitical zones namely North Central, North East, North West, South South and the South West zones.

“Today we are in Enugu for the South East and the last geopolitical zone to receive their allocated share of scrubs and crocs,” she said.

Governor of Enugu State Peter Mbah commended the First Lady, describing her as “the Florence Nightingale of this time” for her commitment to addressing pressing health issues.

He also praised President Tinubu for his leadership.

“His goodwill and love is appreciated. He is an epitome of courage and dedication,” the governor said.

To the midwives who received the kits, Mbah said: “Your kits matter because you matter and your work matters.”

The visit also featured the presentation of a N50 million grant for 1,000 women petty traders in Enugu State under the Renewed Hope Initiative.
