Policeman shoots teenage girl, two women in Bayelsa

Police in Bayelsa have arrested a policeman who shot two women and a teenage girl in Edepie-Etegwe area of Yenagoa the state capital.

A statement on Wednesday by the police spokesperson Asinim Butswat identified the victims as Ebinipiri Onojamadu, 46; Blessing Madufuro, 32; and Alice Azaghene, 17.

The spokesperson said the incident occurred on Tuesday and that the victims were being treated at Glory Land Hospital.

The police patrol team allegedly responsible for the unprovoked attack on the women have been taken into custody, the statement said.

“The unfortunate incident occurred at the popular Tombia-Etegwe roundabout on November 24, 2020, around 7.45pm when the patrol team was stuck in gridlock and one of the police officers, in a bid to clear the gridlock, accidentally fired a shot and the bullet ricocheted and injured three persons,” Mr Butswat stated.

Bayelsa police commissioner Mike Okoli, according to the statement, condemned the attack and assured the incident would be thoroughly investigated and justice served.

The commissioner had earlier claimed that the officers involved in the attack “are not from the Bayelsa State Command.”
