Temitope Olatoye Sugar Oyo lawmaker shot dead

The police in Oyo have arrested the chief whip of the state House of Assembly, Wasiu Akinmoyede, over the murder of an Oyo lawmaker, Temitope Olatoye.

Mr Olatoye, popularly known as sugar, was the House of Representatives member for Lagelu/Akinyele Federal Constituency.

Olatoye was killed by gunmen during the governorship and State House of Assembly elections last Saturday.

The police had on Tuesday arrested one person in connection to the killing, insisting that the killing was not connected with the elections.

However, the deceased’s family countered, saying that the lawmaker’s murder was politically motivated.

Mr Akinmoyede, who currently represents Lagelu state constituency in the Assembly, is a former chairman of the local government area.

Speaker of Oyo House of Assembly, Olagunju Ojo, confirmed to journalists on Wednesday, that Akinmoyede was being investigated for Olatoye’s death.

“I am not aware that he has been taken to Abuja. I am only aware that he is under investigation but I am not sure if he is in Abuja or not.

“Yes, we received a letter that he is under investigation, I am not aware that he has been taken to Abuja or not,” he said.

Oyo police spokesperson, Olugbenga Fadeyi, said the lawmaker was arrested through the AIG zone 11, Leye Oyebade, and the police commissioner, Shina Olukolu.
