There was pandemonium in the Ogolonto area of Ikorodu, Lagos on Monday morning after a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus crushed a student to death.

The tragedy resulted in chaotic traffic gridlock as sympathisers gathered at the scene.

Hoodlums also seized on the incident to go on rampage, attacking BRT buses in sight.

Vanguard quoted an eyewitness, Akin Adeolu, as saying the incident happened at about 7:45am when pupils were rushing to their various schools for usual activities.

The schoolboy, said to be about 13 years old, was trying to dash across the BRT corridor at ever busy Ogolonto Bus Stop when he was knocked down.

Sensing that his life was in danger, the driver of the BRT bus took to his heels to avoid mob action.

Officials of the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (LASEHMU) took the pupil’s body to the mortuary.

It took the intervention of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) and others to restore calm in the area.

An official of Primero Transport Services, owner and operator of the BRT buses, who spoke to Vanguard on anonymity, confirmed the incident saying, “We have commenced an initial investigation into the ugly incident to determine the cause for further action.

“However, we commiserate with the family and colleagues of the deceased. God will give them the fortitude to bear the loss.”
