An operative of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) who shot dead an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has been confirmed dead.
The FSARS officer was attacked by a mob after fatally shooting Rotimi Adeyemo, a LASTMA official on traffic duty. Both men died while being rushed to the hospital.
Police spokesman Abayomi Shogunle said in a tweet on Thursday that the FSARS official’s name could not be revealed because his next of kin had not been informed.
“The inspector that allegedly shot dead late Rotimi Adeyemo ‘m’ at Iyana-Ipaja roundabout, Lagos at 6pm of 28.11.2018 was beaten to stupor by irate mob at the scene. This policeman also died while being rushed to the hospital,” Mr Shogunle tweeted.
In an update to the story, he added: “Both corpses have however been deposited at Mainland General Hospital morgue, Lagos for autopsy. The name of the policeman is withheld because his NoK is yet to be identified by NPF. State CID Panti Yaba is investigating the circumstances surrounding this double-murder case.”
LASTMA confirmed Adeyemo’s death in a Twitter post on Thursday morning.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our gallant officers, Adeyemo Rotimi, who was murdered in cold blood by suspected FSARS operative while discharging his lawful duties at his point in Iyana Ipaja on the 28th of November, 2018,” the tweet read.
Adeyemo was confirmed dead at the Ifako-Ijaiye General Hospital.
There have been calls by the citizenry to disband the FSARS which has been accused of highhandedness, harassment and extortion.
